The sun snuck over the horizon, like an assassin staking its prey.  It robbed the world of privacy, shedding light on the hidden corners of the earth.  Like a relentless invader, it left not a single drop of darkness left, vanquishing them all.  As if the sun were the emperor of the world, all life turned and reveled in the power.  Shadows fled and begged for mercy, but none was shown.  Eventually, the beams shot through a window, and struck Kale.
Kale woke with a start.  He was frustrated with the sun, and rightfully so.  Perhaps if the sun knew of him, the life that he lived, the daily challenges that he had, it would have spared him a few more minutes.  Dispute the fact that kale was awake, he did not move.  Instead, kale preferred to simply keep his eyes closed and lay there.  Although he knew that sleep would not again overtake him, the attempt was made regardless.  He was not successful.
Just then a young man with smooth dark hair crept into the room, carrying a pile of clothing.  He carefully placed them near the corner of the room and ambled over to Kale's listless body.  He placed a hand gently on Kale's bare shoulder.
"What Jason? I'm trying to sleep."  Said Kale in a slightly irritable tone.
"Well its just I know you father expects you to be at breakfast, and a know it takes you a little while to get ready, so I brought your clothes and I though I would wake you up do you could have enough time to get ready."

"What? You don't think I am capable of waking myself up, or getting my clothes? What is next, spoon feeding me? Stupid servant!"

Jason back up a little, but didn't seem terribly surprised at Kale's speech.  He was a short lad, still a look of youth in his face.  He wore simple, single colored clothing, and a single design embroidered piece of wood around his neck.  His jet black hair was cut extremely short, giving his head a slightly rounded look.  Unlike Kale and his kind, Jason had little tack.  For one who was 15 triads, he seemed to have little direction in life.  When Kale was 15, he had ambitions and goals, while Jason did not appear to have any.  Kale was under the impression that Jason certainly didn't work to his full potential. This was why Kale was like the mighty lion, who triumphs over his enemies and rules the animals of the jungle, and Jason a sheep, who must be lead lest he wander astray.
Jason exited through the door, hollering back, "If you need anything, just call"

"fool..." Kale muttered. Yet Jason was lucky in all sincerity.  He lived a simple life, free of worry, unlike Kale.  Kale got out of his bed, and walked over to the pile of clothing.  He slipped them on, careful not to rip or damage them.  The shirt was pure white, and had pulchritude embroidery along the neck. It extended down just past his waist.  In contrast, the pants were dark black and unadorned, though still made of fine material.  Once his clothes were on and he had slipped a gold rimmed belt around his waist above his shirt, he glanced around his room.  It was spacious, and a white as the shirt he had on at the moment.   The stone walls were adored with various items such as weapons, banners, and a few other miscellany objects.  On the opposite side of the room from where Kale was standing was his bed, clearly as elaborate as the clothes he had on now.  Despite the size of the room, it felt confining, as if the clutter of the room decreased the space and trapped one in a prison.  He exited the room and walked down a long corridor until he came to a flight of stairs.   As he descended it, he began to wander what events lay before him this day.  Eventually, he reached the end, and entered yet another hallway, this one just as pale white as every other room here.  A slim figure infiltrated the room from a door on the right.

“Good morning Kale” she said pleasantly.

“Ha! What’s so good about it Keira?”

“I woke up early and watched the sun rise.  It was beautiful this morning, wasn’t it?”

"Ha! Sure...I just wish it could have waited a few more minutes to burn in my face!"

Keira signed, and then started to walk down the hallway.  "Come on Kale.  Dad will be made if we are not at breakfast on time."  Kale followed her, and as he was walking he notice that she was wearing a white dress, with similar designs and color to his own shirt. It flowed all the way to the floor, hovering just above it as if it were a floating phantasm. The thought that they were matching was unbearable   Kale hated matching clothing with anyone, even his sister.  He wasn't truly sure of the reasons behind this, but he was sure that he strongly disliked it.  They reached another staircase, much like the first.  At the bottom was yet another corridor.   However, this one differed from the other, in the fact that two large wooden doors lay at the far side.  It also had many other doors lining it, all of which branched off in different directions.  The large wooden ones at the end though, clearly stole all attention. They stretched all the way to the ceiling, and seemed to loom above the two people.  Keira reached for the handle on the leftmost door and pulled hard.  It swung open and relieved an enormous room.
It stretched on for what seemed like eternity.  The length was so massive that the far end of the room was blurry to the naked eye.  Its height rivaled the length.  From the ceiling hung glorious decorations of bright color, all catching the eye and holding it for a few moments.  Many windows streaked across the wall, letting the sunlight in.  The walls themselves were made of white stone. Despite the brightness that one would expect from the room, it actually had an eerie effect, and a quite whisper that lingered in the ear.  In the very center of the room was a black table, rectangular in shape, which could have easily seated hundreds of people.  Sitting at the table was one single solitary man.
Atticus stood up when they entered.  He was tall, light skinned, and incredibly imposing in person.   “You are late” he said in a flat, monotone voice.

“We are sorry father, its just we…” Kale began

“I don’t care! Excuses are for the weak! How many times have I said this? You will not be weak.  Do you understand?” Atticus billowed

“I’m sorry father.  It will not happen again.” Kale said in a meek voice that simply did not suit him.”

“No apologies! Never admit you are wrong! Simply be right always. Always. Now, eat.  The day is ripe, and the time comes soon when you must take it.”

Kale and Keira sat down at the table adjacent to each other.  A man, Jason, and a young lady all walked into the room, carrying trays of food, goblets, and assorted eating utensils   The man when and put the his entire collection down silently in front of Atticus.  Jason placed his tray next to Kale, and the young lady positioned hers for Keira.  Keira started to thank the young lady, but an acute glare from Atticus silenced her. Everyone left the room except for Atticus and his children     Atticus immediately began eating the food before him.  The other two paused for a second, then slowly began to consume their own cuisine.
Kale picked up one of the utensil, which looked like a pair of tongs, and clamped down on several pieces of lamb.  He then seized another piece of his dinning set.  This one resembled a ladle that would belong to a small pot of soup that was being cooked by men much smaller than Kale.  The miniature ladle dove down and retrieved a bread-like food that had been ground into a minute size, and was topped with a thick liquid that tasted like a mixture of honey, cinnamon, and lemon.  He proceeded to devour the rest of the food on his plate, with the exception of a few pieces of meat.  These he impaled with a small, barbed, cylinder blade, which had been resting next to his square plate.  Kale the leaned back in his chair, recovering from the battle he had just fought.  It was only the that he noticed Atticus staring at him.

“What will you do today, Kale?” Atticus said in his same, banausic voice.

“Well I have to study with Sebastian,  and I was going to do some weapons training in the afternoon.  I was also hoping that maybe tonight I could…”

“No!” Atticus said vehemently.  “You will stay here.  There are more important things in life than going out at night to do…whatever you do! Someday you will be the Throne, as I am.  Only, only if pay attention to what is important.  And nothing else is, but your studies, training, and exercises.”

“Yes father.” Kale said, in a humble voice that did not suit him well.

NOTE: THIS CHAPTER IS NOT COMPLETE! I AM STILL FINISHING IT

The sun rose over the city, encompassing it entirely in its glory.  The light found its way into every nook and crack, exploiting any and all weaknesses it could find.  Eventually, the mighty rays found themselves in an alley where a young man, who looked no older than 17 triads, was lying.  The man’s eyes shot open and began to scan their surroundings.  The man then slowly rose from his makeshift bed he had been occupying.  He seemed tense, as if expecting some hidden danger.  After he apparently found nothing of interest, the man pulled a small bag out from behind his trundle.  He then extracted several small satchels and quickly stuffed them full of pebbles from the ground.  He then put all of the satchels back into the small bag and slung it over his shoulder.
He glanced up at the walls that surrounded his conclave, made his way over to the wall on his right.  The man then began to climb it with seemingly impossible skill. His feet and hands slipped naturally into the various crevasses in the wall, as if they had been assigned their positions long in advance.  The man’s fingers finally gripped the top edge of the wall, and he heaved himself up.  He stood and faced the east, staring directly at the rising sun. He closed his eyes and merely stood there, doing nothing but absorbing the sheer raw energy the morning offered.  An expression of deep thought crossed his face, but only for the briefest of moments.  Then, without warning or hesitation, he took off running and leaped off the building that he had laboriously heaved himself onto moments before.  He landed on the ground with a soft thud.  He then walked a few paces and arrived at a small road.  There were hardly any people on the road, probably because it was still such an early hour.  In one direction, the road led to a large arched gate, through which lush green country could be seen. In the other direction was the center of the city.  Looming tall and ominous in the background was a very large, pure white structure.  The sun’s rays crept around it, searching for a way around, but the building was so enormous that it blocked to main part of the sun from view. The structure was made entirely out of white limestone, and cast a shadow that covered a majority of the city.  Three high towers jutted out of the building, two on the side and one in the center.   The tips of these towers were shaped like the tip a deadly spear.  Even from far away it was easy to tell that the building was elaborately designed, and elegantly crafted, truly an impressive work of art.
The man seemed oblivious to the colossal structure, and merely continued on his way toward to city’s forum.  He picked up his pace slightly and hurried down the road.  As he got closer to the center, he encountered more people.  Everyone seemed to be in good spirits.  Not a single person looked irritable at all.  In fact, the general populace seemed to be getting ready for a very large celebration.  The man bumped into a small boy, knocking him over.  The boy just got up, waved something in the man’s face and shouted very quickly

“Happy triad! This is my 8th one! What about you?”

The man shoved the boy aside and continued onward toward his destination.
As the man approached the center of the city, he encountered a very large marketplace.  Vendors lined both sides of the street, clamoring to passersby about their wares.  Here the people became very dense, and navigation more difficult.  A large number of people seem to be congregation around a stand selling “triad” themed merchandise.   Other merchants were trying to sell various things ranging from armor and weapons, flowers, trinkets, and food.   The man walked up to one of the vendors who were selling bread.

“Hello, my name is David.  How much for these three loafs of bread?”

“Those are some of my finest wares.  Came out of the oven just this morning.  How bout fifteen Lanpores?”

The man reached down and felt the bread.

“This bread is already a bit stale!  I’ll offer you ten Lanpores.”

“Ten?! Are you trying to starve my family? No less than fourteen.”

“Thirteen.”

“Fine! Ill give you them for thirteen.”

Let me get my wallet.

The man pulled a small bag, about the size of his fist, out his pack.  He began going through the bag.

“…Ten, eleven, twelve, and thirteen.  What do you know! The exact amount of money I have!  Here you go.”

He tossed the bag to the vendor and put the bread in his pack.  He then darted into the crowd and disappeared from sight.  A few seconds later, the vendor was heard yelling

“Hey! This is just rocks in here! Thief! Thief!”

Over the din of the crowd, which was increasing in volume exponentially, his voice was drowned out.  Meanwhile, the man approached another merchant, one who selling necklaces, jewelry, and other trinkets.

“Hello, my name is Zane. How much for that beautiful bracelet?”

Thus the process repeated itself, just as with the last vendor.  The man continued this ruse for some time, acquiring a rather large load in his pack.  He would not have been able to continuously repeat this feat if it hadn’t been for the abnormally large crowd that day.   After he swindled another merchant for a rather nice knife, he slipped out of the marketplace and back onto the road that had led him there.  The man had a large grin on his face as he again climbed the building and slipped back down the wall into his hideaway of a home.  He took the pack off his back and emptied its contents onto to ground beside his bed.  Then he smiled contently and scaled the wall once more, immerging back on the street once again after a few seconds.
He started to walk back toward the center of city, when he spied a puddle on the ground.  He walked over to it and looked at his reflection.  He had short, dark brown hair that was sticking up on the side his head.  He licked his hand then tried to flatten it down, without success.  Eventually, after a few more tries, he finally seemed to get his hair the way he liked it.  Overall, his hair looked like he had cut it himself with a dagger or a knife.  His face was likeable, with an open, frank look to it.  On his chin was the beginning of what could become a goatee.  The rest of his face also bore a shadow of something that had the potential to become a beard if given time to grow.  He wore a green shirt with the sleeves cut of at the elbow, and brown pants that ran just above his feet.  His shoes were made of close fitting leather, and were rather unadorned, except for a strange triangle symbol on them.   The man then stood up, straightened his shirt, and began traveling down to path once again.  The sun was just beginning to shine over the top of the large, white building.  By now, the streets were completely packed with people, most of whom were heading toward center of the city as well.   The man found himself stuck between a large man and a larger woman.   He tried to escape, but no opening presented itself.   The large man and woman were talking loudly over his head, but he tried to ignore it.

“Are you excited for this year’s ceremonies?” The enormous man said in a deep, yet raspy voice

“Oh yes!  I can’t wait to see what is in store for us this time!  Dear Atticus never ceases to amaze!  Remember last year when the fox battalion preformed? That was inspirational stuff!”  Said the massive women in a high voice, which was remarkably similar to the sound of a chipmunk.

The crowd continued to move deeper and deeper into the heart of the city.  The man had no choice but to continue going with the crowd.  They passed through the marketplace, which strangely enough, lacked clamoring vendors.  The mass drove onward at a tremendously sluggish speed.  Except for the large crowd in the street, the entire rest of the city seemed empty.  The buzz of the crowd increased as they got closer to the core of the city.   The people seemed to be anticipating something wonderful, and they got more and more restless as time wore on.  The mass finally came to a stop.  The man could still not see around the other people.  Then the mass began moving downward into some sort of giant area.  The man began to struggling even more to escape from the crowd.  However, he remained trapped.   He was forced to move downward into the arena.  Given the fact that he could not escape, he sat down on the benches lining the arena.   Other people kept filing in for some time, until the amphitheatre was overflowing with people.  Then a figure walked out from a small pavilion on the far side.  The crowd erupted and the roar caused the man’s insides to shake.  The figure that had walked out from under the pavilion raised his hands and the crowd went silent.  He was a tall man, wearing elaborately adored clothes, which had gems and gold which were competing for the attention of everyone in the world.  He had dark grey hair that was cropped short and very broad shoulders and an appearance of excellent fitness.  He walked out to the center and began to speak.
“I am Atticus!”

The man said in a deep, powerful voice that no doubt could be heard even in the very back of the amphitheater.  The crowd cheered and screamed, and the din that followed had the effect of great earthquake.  The man, who was still trapped, looked around uncomfortably, but failed to find an exit.  Eventually, the mass died down, and
Atticus spoke again.

“Welcome people of Danae, to the festival of the Triad!  Celebrate with me the success of our great nation of Danae!”

Another cheer rose from the multitude.

“We subdued the barbarians to the north. We finished the last great tower between the Samichaons and us.  Thanks to you, this great country is more prosperous than ever before!  And remember me, your humble leader who guides you and protects you! As one man, I am nothing, but together, you and I, we are powerful!”

Once again the throng of people roared their approval.  Then Atticus continued again.

“Now with this Triad, another class of the Great Guard graduates, and is prepared to keep the peace and protect you from any harm”

Here Atticus paused, as if having a silent joke with himself.

“Now, what I am sure you have all been waiting for, the final test for these graduates and a demonstration for yourself, so that you may be certain that your safety is in good hands.  I present to you, the 7th graduating class of the Great Guard!”

A great procession of men marched.  These men were wearing a uniform with a green base, with golden designs running up and down.  While the uniforms did look beautiful, they also look powerful and strong, making the men look unbreakable.  The men lined up in neat rows and stood perfectly still.   Atticus addressed the crowd again

“We will start with an instructor’s demonstration.  Desmond here is one of your most loyal guards.  When he was traveling on a diplomatic mission, he was capture by a group of hostiles.  Knowing that they would be punished for killing him, they instead removed both of his hands.  Despite this, Desmond finished the mission and returned home.  For his loyally, Desmond was rewarded with a several new set of artificial hands. The set that he is wearing now is designed to launch disks out of a contraption attracted to his arm when he flexes certain muscles.  Just as Desmond was rewarded for his loyalty, so shall you be rewarded for yours to Danae!  Before we begin, I would also like thank the prisoners of both war and crime, for so willingly and humbly giving of themselves for your entertainment today.”

The crowd laughed, and then grew tense with anticipation.  The man, who was still immobilized within the mass, began to look pale, also seeming to anticipate, but in a different fashion the coming events.

The crowd laughed, and then grew tense with anticipation.  The man, who was still immobilized within the mass, began to look pale, also seeming to anticipate, but in a different fashion the coming events.  At that moment, two figures in solid grey uniform dragged a hooded man into the arena.  They were followed by another man who was carrying a wooden board with a few smaller wooden pieces.  The man set the board upright near the center of the amphitheater and chained the hooded man to it.  Desmond walked lackadaisically slowly around till he was facing the man, standing about one hundred feet away. With a sudden fluid motion, Desmond spun around and several disks shot from his the attachment on his arm, the sun reflection off of them as they flew toward their destination.  The prisoner flinched, then looked up and saw the disks sticking in the wood less than an inch from his head.  He looked quite surprised to be alive.

Desmond lifted both his arms again and a flurry of disks flew toward the ensnared man on the board.   He closed his eyes and appeared to mutter a quite prayer.  When the air cleared, all the metal projectiles were lodged in the board, perfectly outlining the prisoner.   The crowd stood up and erupted with applause and praise at Desmond’s feat.  The prisoner and the man both breathed a sigh of relief for the lack of death.  Suddenly, Desmond spun around and fired one last disk.  It struck home, hitting the prisoner right in the jugular vein.   The blood poured out of his neck, and the shocked prisoner fell limp.  The man in the crowd convulsed and seemed to barely keep from vomiting.  In contrast, the rest of the mob roared its approval.  The man was the only one who did not scream for more or join in the blood thirsty cry.  He simply stood there, still trapped in his own personal dungeon.  One of his jailers struck up a conversation with another man, expressing his exuberance and anticipation for the remainder of the day’s events.

“I love the triad celebrations! And to think this is just the beginning.  If we are lucky, there will be lots more bloodshed today. If not, we’ll have to wait till tomorrow.  Still, I’m sure it will be entertaining! Do you remember coming to your first triad ceremony when you were a kid?

“I do! Wasn’t that the one when they ripped off a guy’s arm and killed two other people with it? Atticus still had brown hair then.  Things have been so much better since he came into power after the Great Revolution.  Just look at how much the entertainment has improved!”

Both men chortled before the second continued.

“What’s even better is the fact that we get rid of all those criminals in the jails too.  It’s so efficient to use them for the Guard demonstrations.  So this whole thing entertains us, gets rid of criminals, and gives the newest members of the guard something to practice with”

The man’s face now suggested that he had regained his composure. He once again attempted to escape, this time by asking the people around him to move so that he could pass.  Either they didn’t hear him, they couldn’t move, or they simply chose not to respond.  The result was the same, no matter which was true.
Atticus once again walked into the centermost of the arena.  He raised both his hands and the assembled grew silent, as if Atticus was a great maestro about to begin conducting a symphony.  Then he spoke, his voice carrying the unstoppable power of thunder.   “Now, I give you the best of the twentieth graduating members of the Guard.  They will perform feats of great skill and strength before you’re eyes!’

At that moment about fifty soldiers streamed into the arena.  They wore beautifully decorated chain mail, with a dark forest green base, adored and decorated with golden designs. They all had black gloves and boots, which somehow appeared to blend into the dark green sleeves of the uniform.  The militia looked like a picturesque piece of art, and yet there was nothing fragile about it.   The soldiers clearly had bulging muscles and a glint in their eyes that implied ferocity.  Each carried what looked like a thick stick, the measure of the which being about the length of the ground to the waist.  A few also brought other items that bore resemblance to various weapons.
By then all of the soldiers had formed a straight line.  Atticus once again stepped forward

“The first feat these brave warriors will accomplish is an incredible one.  Five of them will face twenty armed combatants…blindfolded.”

The crowd gasped and began muttering among itself.  Atticus continued to speak.

“These criminals who they will be fighting have been told that if they kill all five members of the Guard, they will be cleared of all charges and let free.  It’s twenty of them verses five blindfolded men, and those twenty have freedom to fight for! Prepare for the spectacle that you will tell your children, and your children’s children, about. “

Twenty men carrying axes, large hammers, and a sword or two were escorted into the amphitheater.    Five soldiers stepped forward and pulled out a strip of cloth and covered their eyes with it. They then walked to the center.  The men flicked their sticks left, and then right and a metal blade sprung out in an arch at each end.  For a moment, there was only silence.  Everyone leaned in, and the anticipation filled air made it hard to breathe.    Suddenly, one of the criminals gave a loud cry and charged.  He was immediately followed by the rest of his colleagues.  They swung at the soldiers relentlessly, but each blow was parried and followed by a swift counterstrike.  The man who first yelled was the first to go.  While trying to aim a blow to the head of one of the soldiers, he found his own suddenly no longer attached.   The rest kept fighting, but they didn’t last much longer.  The soldiers’ dual sided weapons spun and struck with a speed almost too fast for the human eye to follow.  One man was stabbed through the heart, another slashed across the stomach, left to die as his inner body parts fell to the ground.    Before long, it was over.  The ground was stained with blood and laden with bodies.  Despite all of this, none of the soldiers had a single blotch of red on them, neither of their own blood, nor that of their assailants.
The crowd could no longer control itself and stood up, shouting all sorts of hullabaloo.    The man was not able to repress his own inner feelings, and he vomited onto the ground.  Atticus began speaking again, but the man just kept vomiting, seemingly oblivious to all other events.  When he finally did stand back up, his eyes were dull and vacant.  Life seemed to have left them momentarily.  Many more demonstrations were given during the course of the event, but the man appeared not to see them.  Someone shoved his back, sending him stumbling forward, and a woman’s voice said

“Come on, move it along.  Shows over and I’m hungry! Come along.”

The man slowly exited the amphitheater along with the rest of masses.   When the man finally seemed to realize he was walking, he was on the main road, which was now deserted.  The sun was beginning to set in the west, and each little ray of light seemed to be slowly giving the world up to the shadows.  The man began to wander back in the direction of his dwelling.  However, he was startled by the sudden cry of “Halt!”
A carriage pulled by two black horses came into view.  In the carriage resided a woman and a girl of about eleven triads.  Both were elaborately dressed in green, with fine embroidery and beautiful designs.    Both also wore necklaces and bracelets laden with jewels.    Their faces also bore a resemblance, as they had similar large and smashed looking noses.  They were escorted by two guards.

“Can I keep him mommy?  He would make such a fascinating pet.”   The little girl begged of the woman while clinging to her sleeve.

“Not today Josephine darling.  Remember last time you forgot to feed it and it starved? Maybe next time.”   The woman told her daughter.

“Please, please, please mommy!  I could train him to do all sorts of tricks and such.  I promise I’ll feed him everyday!   Can we at least talk to him?”

“Oh fine! You there! Boy! Come here!”   The man looked up and saw that the woman was gesturing to him.  He approached the carriage with a clear air of caution in his steps.

“What is your name?”  The woman asked him.

“Kyle.  My name is Kyle.”

“Can I please mommy? Please?”

“No! But you may decide what we should do with him.  This is you chance to show that you are a big girl.”

The girls moved over so as to be closer to the man.  The man look quite confused as to what was going on.  The girl then began to ask him questions.

“Where do you live?”

“Well I live just down the way, a few minutes away from here”

“Do you live on the street?”

“I…I guess I do but it is rather…”

“Do you have a job?”  She interrupted

“Not at the moment, but I…”

“Any family”

“Nope, just me in the world.”

“Do you have anything to offer the world?”

“Well I guess that is a matter of perspective.”

“I will take that as a no.  Any education?”

“Of course not! No one down here gets any education.”

“The way I see it” the little girl said.  “Is your life has no meaning.  You are never going to amount to anything and you are never going to do anything to at would help further the progress of Danea. Therefore, you don’t need to live.  I think you should be executed to take the burden off society, and to free yourself from the load of knowing all this.  It’s what is best for you.  Guards!  Take this man to the palace prisons to be executed.”

The man looked shocked and very confused.

“Wait, what? Hey! Get your hands off me!”

The two guards grabbed his arms and began dragging him toward the white building.

“Hey! Let me go!  This is a mistake!”He shouted. In the distance, he heard the mother congratulating her daughter proudly.

“Good job back there! You showed real maturity.  I think you are really growing up.”
